JOB OPENINGS > Vista Volunteers

Dear Friends of Literacy,

Through special funding from Salt Lake County, we are seeking to fill 4 VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) positions to support a Workplace Literacy Project.
The 12 months of service will begin in late January or early February 2004.
Note-A VISTA member can not hold another job or attend school during the 12-months of service.

VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a part of AmeriCorps, a network of national service programs that engage thousands of members nationwide each year in intensive service to address poverty and meet critical community needs.
VISTA members must commit to one full year of full-time service. The member will receive a total living allowance of $9,504.00 for the 12-month commitment.
This means that members will be paid a gross amount of approximately $396.00 twice a month. A basic health care benefit is provided. (This health care does not include eye exams, glasses, routine physicals, dental, etc.) At the successful completion of a VISTA member's term of service, the VISTA member is eligible to receive an education award for the amount of $4,725.00. The education award voucher can we processed at any school that is eligible to receive Federal Student Loans. The education award can be used to pay tuition or to pay on existing student loans. For other information about VISTA, see www.AmeriCorps.gov website.

Literacy Action Center and English Skills Learning Center are collaborating on a Workplace Literacy Project that is partially funded through Salt Lake County Social Service Block Grant and matching funds from the community. The purpose of this project is to teach employable native English-speaking and nonnative English speaking adults residing in Salt Lake County to improve the oral and written literacy skills needed in the workplace. We will deliver these courses across Salt Lake County then follow up with more personal, ongoing small group or individualized tutoring. VISTA members will be helping with the development, delivery, and assessment of this project. All qualified candidates must share our philosophy: all adults can learn; instruction must be relevant and useful; each adult learner is unique; and adult learners are equal partners in the learning process.
